Caryl had such an eventful birthday in Chicago it deserves its own blog entry!

After the yummy italian food, Daire took us to buy the cheapest liquor available in Chicago! In a pharmacy?! we weren't complaining though - 2 bottles of 11% wine in both white and rose variety (containing sulphites) and a small bottle of sprite (to disguise said sulphites) = $8! it was a great start to the night!

We predrank and got ready at Daire's student apartment on floor 12, overlooking lake michigan. once we reached a tipsy state from our cheap wine we headed out in a taxi to a bar that serves $2 pitchers of beer - yes, $2!!! unfortunately the queue stretched back half a mile so we gave up, getting in another taxi to another bar - this turned out to be the trend as each bar Daire suggested turned out to be either closed or void of human life! with 4 minutes to midnight and the start to Caryl's bday approaching, we still weren't in a bar or club! the midnight moment was actually spent in a taxi with the driver providing the bday entertainment! (please see vid).

We settled for a half empty irish bar which seemed like a hotspot for the over 40's! but we were pleased to be somewhere where we could dance and make merry! the place was actually really cool and we made a pact to stay there until 4am! we did a pretty good job - dragging caryl away from a basketball game between herself and a 7ft Michael Jordan eat-your-heart-out! oh my. we left at 3.30am,

You know when you get drunk with a friend who you spend everyday with and have no real reasons to argue - a small petty disagreement about the smallest thing escalates into a full blown argument? (ours being in good cheer though! in hysterics between our raised words). this is how we spent the entire taxi ride home to the astonishment of the driver and poor Daire. our argument was on... eggs! somehow we managed to create an argument on free range eggs - both pretty much arguing the same thing! we realised how stupid we were being when it came to livi questioning the origin (whether it was organic/free range) of the creme eggs that caryl gave her for her bday! by this time, we were already up on the 12th floor, Daire preparing our beds for us. we laugh now but it was serious talk! our whole roadtrip hanging by a thread!

diasgreement aside, we fell asleep and yet again slept through the 7.15 then 8.15 then 9.15 alarm that we had set in order to catch the train back to Ivans by midday. we finally crawled out of bed just before 10, allowing us to catch the 10.30 (which involved another hurried goodbye to Daire and a sprint for the train!).

Ivan was at the station to pick us up :) and took us back to his for a traditional, birthday 'fry-up', complete with British baked beans...eeeeeeeee, this made us both so happy.
The bday celebrations continued with a tour of Naperville - a quaint town with museum that we managed to sneak into for free through the backgate! we found ourselves alone in the recreated Victorian town which seemed to be closed up. being as discrete as possible failed as one woman kitted out in full period costume walked past us granting a cheery hello. we quickly made our exit.

We had a chipotle dinner - then strolled around the town for a while, coming across a college baseball game! how american can you get!!? it was hilarious as it seemed to be a scene directly taken from a teen movie. there were jocks playing (T.J., Tyler etc. haha), their girlfriends, parents and pets watching. also myley cyrus intermittently playing on the loudspeaker. once the game had finished we experienced our first school ground american bullying! we were heckled from afar by a group of jocks. hahaha. i wonder where we would fit in the high school heirarchy?! seems like we'd be chicken feed! lol.

Mrs Flores had prepared a bday teaparty whilst we were out - a cake with candles waiting for Caryl - dinosaur chicken nuggets and more baked beans! we got through half a corona at the party and 1 game of battleships.

Exhausted from all the excitement of the night before and the day we retired to bed.
