We went to Nong Khai with the intentions of staying one night and left 3 nights later. It was so relaxing that each day we decided to stay another day.  There wasn't much aside from hammocks, reading, and relaxation, but we did go to a Buddha sculpture park.  Someone built lots of BIG Buddhas in this park.  We cycled there, which we were told would take ten minutes – it took nearly an hour and we had to cross a small motorway, making it a most interesting cycle.  We ended the day with more hammocks and an excellent meal.  Davy’s curry was probably one of the best things we’ve eaten so far – and all for a costly £5 (including 2 beers!!).  But the beer started flowing and we met big Tony – a 65-year-old man from Manchester who stumbled into the bar and stuck around longer than we did.

The next morning was a bit rough and the downpour kept us from sleeping a bit longer in the hammocks.  It doesn’t seem to rain often, but when it does, it is a big deal.  The rain kept us from getting to the border, but after an hour or so it cleared up and we were off on a tuk tuk to the border and on to Laos.

Second glitch in the matrix – Davy can’t find his passport.  After spending nearly 20 minutes pulling everything out of both of our bags, we began to believe that he actually didn’t have his passport.  We took a tuk tuk back to the guesthouse and prayed the entire way that it was still in the room and thinking of the best way to get him to an embassy and get a new passport.  Luckily, we didn’t have to go to an Embassy.  As it turns out, the passport was rolled up in one of the towels.  ??

Now I am solely responsible for both passports and Davy isn’t allowed to touch them.

After our third tuk tuk ride we were out of Thailand and at the border of Laos.  After a short few minutes we had our visas and were on our fourth tuk tuk of the day.  This tuk tuk ride was a bit longer than most – 22km.  It took nearly an hour to get to the city center, but it was worth it to ride in this mini pick-up truck thing with Davy’s bag on top and the strap to it hanging off the side.  We made it to Vientiane safe and sound and, luckily, so did his bag.
