This is meant to be THE place for mineral samples (and gems, but I'm not so interested in those). However, the constant harassment by touts trying to sell you bits of coloured glass was getting on my wick and I'd lost all the passion for sample shopping. Not to mention the fact that I couldn't trust anyone in this town to give me a fair price.

All the same, I still wanted a sample from Sri Lanka.

The shop was on the way back to the bus station from town. It was in an old building set back from the road, and looked like it should have been employed in government duties rather than for a 'Rock and Gemstone Emporium', but never-the-less that was what the sign professed, and that is indeed what we got.

The first shop we entered claimed mainly to be a museum, but he had several samples in cabinets (and also a huge table covered with dusty samples for me to search through), and I was so entranced by the quality of the pieces he had that I couldn't help but covert all of them. He had fantastic sheet formations of Graphite, perfectly octahedral Spinels and so many other goodies.....I thought I'd hit the jackpot.

I began to express an interest in a few of the samples that I thought would be the most memorable from Sri Lanka, along with being the easiest to transport. At that point he told me that none of the pieces in the cabinets were for sale, and they were actually part of his private collection!!
