Upon arriving in Pulau Weh we were glad to be out of the hustle and bustle of Aceh. The beach at Gapang was small but ample and the snorkeling possibilities looked fantastic.
The first snorkeling day we spent the morning around the right hand side of the beach checking out the small coral outcrops attached to the fallen rocks from the headland. We don't know any specific names, but there were some fantastic colours and the fish were huge! As you swim across the bag towards the pier the coral gets larger and prettier, with round flat Lilly-shaped corals in a fascinating array of colours. Jumping off the pier into the clear blue waters was also a highlight of that day, especially as we were tired from the days swimming and the sun was going down.
Day 2 snorkeling began with a very early start to try and get a peek at one of the 4 sea turtles that reside on the right hand side of the beach. At around 9am we were in the water and paddling towards the headland when one came into view. They're much bigger than I expected and this one came close to a foot and a half long. They swim very majestically, and when Will took a dive to swim next to it, it merely glanced over at him and continued swimming slowly into the open water, just as if he'd barely recognized that we existed. In the afternoon we went to the pier to jump off before it got dark and cold and were met by our neighbor's from the bungalow next door. These two teenage boys had been snorkeling under the pier and had come upon a long tubular snake-like animal with tentacles where a head should be.....so they decided to go down, pick it up in a t-shirt and bring it up to the surface for a closer look. As they got it out of the water the outer skin did not possess the structural integrity required to hold the insides in, so it stretched and stretched like Stretch-Armstrong until little leaks sprouted and half of it fell back into the water, leaving the other half pulsating the the young teens t-shirt. I suppose the structure of the animal was not well equipped for atmospheric use....and duly failed with messy consequences.....
