This weekend I went to Cinque Terre with a couple of friends, we left on Thursday night and got back to Siena tonight. Cinque Terre is a group of 5 little beach towns all within about 6 miles of each other. We stayed in Monterosso, which is the farthest north of the towns, in a cute little apartment that was owned by a little old lady and her son who were so nice and gave us ideas of places to eat and things to do while there. On Friday the weather was perfectly sunny and warm and we hiked to all of the 5 towns. Basically the hiking path between the first couple of towns consisted of a million stairs straight up a steep hill and then a million stairs straight down the other side. One man that we met on the trail who was from BC said that the hike between Vernazza and Corniglia had 1400 stairs up and 1300 down. But the hike was totally worth it, the views were amazing and it was a nice break from all the churches and museums we have been seeing. I think that my favorite towns were Monterosso and the Vernazza. It was nice because we were there towards the end of tourist season so we didn't have to deal with all the crowds that usually flood the Cinque Terre during the summer months.
On Saturday the plan was to go to the beach, but the weather had gotten really cold over night so that didn't really happen. We just hung out and relaxed around town. The sun came out for a couple of mins so we sat on the beach and read for a while but then it got cold again and we had to go find some warmth.
On Sunday it took us 7 hours to get home...all because the first train we had to take was 10 mins late, which lead to us missing our next connection and the 2 after that. Traveling by train or bus on Sundays is not so much fun because there are very few trains and buses running so if you miss one you have a long wait until the next one. But we are home finally and now its time for me to write a paper and study for my Italian quiz tomorrow. Next weekend we are going to Rome on another mandatory excursion and I can't wait. Also we leave on Thursday morning which means we only have three days of class this week...score!
