Where I stayed
After leaving Singapore on the evening Wednesday 7th November we flew to Melbourne arriving there at about 7.00am, so no sleep again!! Our flight onto Cairns was good and we picked up the car to drive to Port Douglas where we are staying for 9 nights. Great a chance to unpack. The drive took in some beautiful coastal scenery with long empty beaches and forests behind. We checked into our studio apartment at the Hibiscus Gardens Spa resort which is lovely. All very tropical with palms trees full of parrots and other exotic birds. It is at the moment also very quiet but I am sure it will get busier as the eclipse day approaches. The rest of the day was spent exploring the town which is very laid back but quite up market with lovely shops and restaurants. Four mile beach is stunning and there are lovely sunsets opposite the marina.
Friday 9th November
Planning to have a lazy day today after all the travelling and sightseeing. After breakfast by the pool side we went shopping along Macrossan Street (100 metres from our hotel) which is the main (only) street of the town. Four mile beach is only 300 metres up the road which is great. The beach is spectacular and as the name suggests is about 4 miles long with hills and rainforest behind. It is lovely and sandy with sun loungers for hire, a section cordoned off for safe swimming (keep the stingers and crocs out) and real Aussie life guards. Most of the day was spent swimming and lying in the lovely warm tropical sunshine. Tomorrow we will explore further afield so will have a bit more to tell. Will add the photos and slip into the pool again!!
