Today I went with Tim and some of the volunteers on a hike. We met in Chinchero, a nearby town renown for its textiles, and then hiked through the mountains using old Incan trails to end up at Machu Colca (Machu = old, Colca = storage). It was beautiful and it was hard. But not as hard as yesterday.
Yesterday as I was sitting at my desk working, my boss, Tim, calls me up to his office and tells me we are going hiking in, oh, about 10 minutes. Thank goodness I was wearing my hiking boots! So we went to Machu Colca and there was a man who almost didn't let us in due to the late hour, but after some small talk made by Tim, he let us go. I was wheezing within about 30 seconds and that pounding in my head seemed to signal an imminent explosion.
My head didn't explode, luckily, but boy is it crazy how you can literally feel the thinner air. Not that I'm some sort of triathlete or anything, but I looked like I'd spent my whole life up till this point in a bed. He showed me part of the trails that we'd be taking the next day and then we sort of just found our own way back to the bottom of the hill.
Anyways, Machu Colca is being restored right now but they've already finished some. They used to store their crops there and the random walls were put in the windiest places so that whatever was inside would be kept dry and fresh.
Backing up to last weekend, Ronald and I chose our puppy! He's the fattest one of the bunch which means he's strong, right? At least that's how I'm interpreting it...I took my camera with me for the sole purpose of taking a photo with the chosen one, and completely forgot about it. So I'll have to wait until next weekend to snap a pic. He has a white body and I think most of his head is brown. It's a boxer mix, but this one doesn't have the smushed in snout and isn't as wrinkly. We're also not going to cut his tail, FYI. Talk about cruel. When we pick up the pup the woman said she would go to her vet with us so we can do the necessary.
Totally excited about the pets we're about to have though it's definitely going to take some extra work, especially when we go on vacation in September! We're going to Chile's fiestas patrias.
As for the job, it's pretty easy. I foretell a lot of free time at the office in my future, but I hope it's not true because I love being busy. As soon as I get the organization down and my own personal system of reminders, I think everything will run like clockwork. I mean, it's not rocket science...
