It's just a short two hour journey to our next destination at Lennox Head which is 19 kms south of Byron Bay the world famous surfing beach. The Lake Ainsworth Camping Park is very nice with a lake and an ocean beach and it also has free wi-fi which we intend making full use of as we’ve barely had any internet connection for a week. The weather is really closing in now and apart from a quick stroll around the town, which lacks much character, we decide to hunker down in the van. Ghader manages to cook a meal in a gale force wind which is not only admirable but also tastes good. There is torrential rain all night and some people on the site are washed out but we stay reasonably dry.
We go for a short visit to Byron Bay the next day. It’s a smaller and altogether more pleasant place than I was expecting with nice swimming and surfing areas. Again the weather is bad so we don’t swim or stop long.
There are constant flood warnings now for Queensland and north New South Wales and as we head towards Brisbane the next day to return the campervan it seems about the right time to bring this camping phase to an end. It’s been a lot of fun and quite hard work at times, we’ve covered about 1600 kms in ten days, but it has enabled us to see some fantastic places off the beaten track. We’re just left wondering whether to upgrade to a higher spec van for our camping in New Zealand.
