Today we went on a day hike up to the Manshouk Mametova Glacier. We were led by two guides, Asya and Alexei, from the Almaty Trekking club (www.trekkingclub.kz).

We started early in the morning on the one hour drive to the trail head, and began the hike at 8 am at an altitude of about 2600 m. The first part of the trail went along a dirt road up the gorge. It wasn't too steep, but quite slippery since it had snowed quite a lot in the previous week and the trail was covered in ice. After about 2 hours we reached a small dam and turned sharply left up a very steep snow slope. We could definitely feel the effect of altitude now, since we were well over 3000 m at that stage. The snow started to get quite deep here too, and our ascent was fairly slow going, but the weather was absolutely beautiful, and we were surrounded by stunning mountains and glaciers.

We reached the top of the glacier moraine at 3600 m after a total of 4 hours of climbing. We had lunch there looking at the huge glacier and the frozen lake below it, and then went back down along the same route.

The climb down was very slow going since the snow was now very soft and knee-deep.
