In the two days I'd been in Auckland, all I’d seen was the CBD. It was time to have a look further afield, hence the day tour. As was becoming typical for these things, it rained all day and it seemed as if the tour might be called off, but fortunately it went ahead.

Our first destination was the Auckland Harbour Bridge. We were to walk across it, well, strictly speaking underneath it, in order to get some cracking views of Auckland. Although we did walk across it, the weather did not play its part and so all we saw was the dull grey of a city, its only true landmark being the Sky Tower. Having seen people do the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb, I expected something similar here, but I was disappointed. Instead what we did seemed to be an advertisement for bungy jumping as the company made us watch people do bungy jumps underneath the bridge.

According to the brochure, we were due to go to one of Auckland’s great beaches next, which was in North Shore (coincidentally, where Craig lives). I’m sorry, but I’d spent the last month looking at beaches up and down the Australian coast and this was not even close to that standard. I would even go so far as to say that there were better beaches in the UK than this particular one. Another disappointment.

From the beach, we walked up a hill to get a view of Rangitoto Island, a volcanic island just off the mainland, which was worthwhile. That was the highlight of the day, but then it was back to Auckland and the CBD. As a tour, I have to say it was disappointing.

In the afternoon, Craig finally got in touch via text. "Ah," I thought, “contact!” In the text he gave his excuses and that he’d phone me a bit later on... didn’t happen. So what to do? By this time I had no faith in ever seeing Craig, so I extended my stay in the backpackers to one more night and went out and got wasted with some people I’d met during the day.

I don’t know, maybe it was just that I wanted to go home, but Auckland really wasn’t doing it for me. To think I could have finished my trip in Fiji instead of in Auckland. Damn! Craig has a lot to answer for!
