After the exertions of the day before, travelling from volcanic lake to volcanic lake, from waterfall to waterfall plus all the walking in-between, I was (understandably, I think) shattered by the end of the day. Unfortunately, the day wasn't quite over. No sooner had we got back to Cairns than I had to pack up my things and go. I managed to get some dinner and then it was off to the bus station to catch the midnight Greyhound to Townsville.

It was a relatively short trip, but it was booked solid, so I couldn’t stretch out as I might have wanted, thus any sleep would be fitful at best. This was my first Greyhound in a few weeks, since going to Broome, in fact and the difference was extraordinary, if I needed any proof that the east coast of Australia is full of backpackers, then here was the evidence. From Darwin to Kununarra, there must have been at most 20 people on the bus; from Kununarra to Broome there had to be less than 10 (both of these were long journeys, besides). Cairns to Townsville is a relatively short trip (5 hours), but seats were like gold dust. Again, in the other part of the country, the passengers could be described as mature and, actually, mostly aboriginal. Here, almost everyone was European (mostly German) and between the ages of 17 and 20. God, did I feel old!

We arrived in Townsville at 5:35am and, of course, there was no way the hostel would be open, so I just chilled out at the bus terminal for an hour or two until I could catch a bus to the hostel. Once I got my room at the hostel, I had considered going for a walk around Townsville and seeing what was there. I got about 200 metres up the road and decided that it was too hot and humid to go gallivanting about in the sun, so I went back to the hostel and to bed. That was all she wrote. I spent the entire day sleeping, dozing or just laying in bed. In the words of Murtaugh (Lethal Weapon), "I’m too old for this shit!"
