Day 7 - June 25 Written by Stephen

Wallabadah to Nundigilly

Our first night out on the road and we all had slept well till 1am when the resident rooster started crowing intermittently every 10 or 15 minutes {he was having a busy night}. In the morning the boys checked out the First Fleet display next to the park and yes there was some George's {ship’s crew not convicts surprisingly}. Suzanne and I packed the van up and we were back on the road at about 8.30 so not too late a start. We headed into Tamworth past the big Golden Guitar and we picked up a few things at Bunnings, refuelled and grocery shopped to stock up the van and then it was time to head north.

A fair drive today as we headed through Manilla, Barraba and Bingara a pleasant flat drive as we headed up a valley with hills on either side. I had sussed out a short cut from Bingara to Gravesend which would see us by pass Warialda and save us about 40km’s. It proved to be a good choice as bar the road being a bit narrower and quite a few Grid crossings floodways and grazing cattle on the road it was a good shortcut. It was very funny hearing the hand holds all clacking back into place as all the passengers grab them to hang on as we cross the cattle grids.

Refuelled in Moree and we arrived at Nindigully just on dusk. Our stop for the night (another freebie) is the Nindigully Pub where you set up in the bush behind the pub (the oldest pub in QLD still operating) on the banks of the Moonie River. The pub is also infamous for the meals it serves – the 1kg T-Bone steak looked like something Fred Flinstone would sit down to eat and the mixed grill would serve 2. We however were up for the challenge and took on the Road Train Burger which is ginormous and fed the four of us t was so funny when we were served and a lot of the other diners all wanted photos of it also. It tasted great and was a great feed and washed down by a couple of cold schooners I was FULL. The pub had memorabilia all over the walls and lots of photos and newspaper articles (lots about the recent floods which went right up to the pub door). The floors of the pub sloped and there was great outdoor bar and beer garden. A TOP SPOT.

To cap the night off the 10 o’clock news (ABC Radio) informed me that the Saints were 18 points up half way through the Final Qtr and was great to hear at 11 o’clock that not only had we won by 24 points but we had kept Geelong to only 3 points for the second half. GO SAINTS.
