The day before leaving Sao Paulo for Rio, I talked to a traveler who had been in Brazil for a while.  I told him my basic route, and said that I was going to Rio the next day.  He looked at me and asked me what was wrong with me.  I thought there was nothing wrong with me, but it was explained that it`s insane to go from Sao Paulo to Rio without stopping at any of the beach towns in between.  So, what was wrong with me was the fact that I had never heard of Paraty.

So, it was off to Paraty.

My 6 hour trip turned in to an 11 hour trip due to a long stop in Ubatuba and a Brazilian Police Shakedown, but I made it by 11.30, checked in, and went to sleep.  The next morning, I found out why it was weird to go from Sao Paulo to Rio without any stops.

I don`t even really like beaches, but I loved Paraty.  Apparently it`s usually really quiet there, but because it was Easter weekend, a lot of Paulistas and Cariocas had driven in for the weekend.  It was full of tourists, but Brazilian tourists.

I spent most of my time in Paraty just walking around the old town and up and down the closest beach.  One day I caught the bus with someone to another beach called Trinidade, which is unique because it almost meets the edge of the rainforest, so the forest comes right up to the beach and you have to walk through it to go to different sections.

The other highlight of Paraty was the music.  Because it was a holiday, there was live music everywhere.  Even my hostel (which was also a public restaurant) had a stage that hosted live music every night.  There was one guy who played twice, Fabio Biggie, who was incredible.  It was like Jack Johnson, if Jack Johnson wasn`t boring.

There isn`t a whole lot to do in Paraty, but it`s a great place to relax.  If you go from Rio to Sao Paulo and don`t stop in Paraty, there`s something wrong with you.

I`m in Rio now, I`ll write again when I get to Buenos Aires.  I still haven`t put up pictures, because the computers are slow here (again), but I might try later.

Bye!
