arrived in Bali without too much trouble. Not much in the way of public transport so taxis seem to be the norm for longer journeys.
ended up staying somewhere fairly pricey (well, 18 quid a night rather than 5 to 10) as all the cheapies were full - high season at the moment apparently.
People are nice and food seems good but not that cheap - beer nearly 2 pounds per pint...
beaches are also not as great as I'd imagined Bali to be.
We spent 1 day at Sanur beach and I went Kitesurfing. The water was really shallow but I was assured this was not a problem. However, I came off my board and managed to tread on a Sea Urchin which is still embedded in my foot (I'm writing all this retrospectively - it's 24th today). The kitesurf guy administered local first aid which involved hitting my foot really hard with a stick to break up the spikes which were in it and then pouring the sap from a tree onto my foot. Apparently there's not chance of getting the spikes out as they are so soft so I just have to wait till they are broken down. Nice! (Gemma tried to get them out but as the guy said, they are too soft. It seems to be getting less painful...)
Day 2 was spent at Kuta beach where we went surfing which was pretty cool. Not exactly the epic surf you'd expect from Bali but was pretty reasoable - better than cornwall and not as busy! Kuta itself seems a bit of a dump - really busy, lots of building work, constant traffic, big hotels etc. Not the beach paradise it possibly once used to be!
so far I've been stung by Jellyfish at least twice, attached by leeches and trodden on a sea urchin. 1 1/2 months to go, what else can I achieve?
Going to Ubud tomorrow.
