DAY 1 - started the day in Punta del Diablo and got a 4 hour bus to Montevideo. Was really hungry when we got there so went to find some authentic Uruguyan cuisine. Saw a really busy place, got a table and drinks and decided to go for the all you can eat buffet. This turned out to be Chinese but we were not too disappointed. Spent the rest of the afternoon walking around Centro, went to an Artisan Market and walked down the less attractive section of the Rambla near the harbour. Gem went into a shop and tried on three dresses but did not buy any. So many streets in Uruguay are given names after dates in their history, we walked down 18th July, 25th May and 25th August to name a few. The whole country seems also to have one national hero - Artigas - if there is a statue it is of him.

DAY 2 - went to the laundrette and gave ín all our clothes to get washed - it had become critical! They have taken our names on a scrap of paper but that is all and we have no receipt - so we hope to get them back tomorrow. Walked to Punta Carretas and went to a market Feria de Villa Biarritz. It was a clothes market - interesting if you like dresses, jewellery or baby clothing - Gem liked it but realized she liked a dress she had tried on the day before. So after the market we walked back to 18th July admiring some architecture on the way - lots of colonial houses with huge doors sandwiched by ugly concrete flat pack type constructions! Found our way back to the shop where Gem had tried on the dresses the day before but the one she liked had gone! So tried on a few more and eventually found one she liked even more! How exciting - Gem is very impressed with Doogals patience. Anyway, made our way to Mercado del Puerto to see what was there and it turned out to be full of restaurants with huge grills cooking all types of meat. We ordered too much food (again) and had a huge steak each, with chips and salad. Really good though, and we sat on the bar and watched all the meat being cooked. Then walked to go up the tallest tower in Montevideo to go to the top. Was not the nicest walk past a massive derelict train station which never seemed to end, and when we got there it was closed! Curse the man in the hostel who told us it was open in the afternoon when it was actually open in the morning! Had a slightly less dodgy walk back past the parliament. Got back and had some much needed mint tea to help aide the digestion of our steaks - think it is going to need more than mint tea.

Jose gervasio artigas was a very interesting/important national hero who lived from 1764-1850. Just thought I'd look him up on google.
