We had planned to spend a day in Tolu on the Tuesday to rest up after our two days of cycling. Previously we probably wouldn't have done this, instead we would’ve just cycled on and had to man up as we went.  However, we know that we have some serious ascents ahead of us over the next week before getting to Medellin (about 2000 metres), which should be our next nice destination.  Therefore we thought one last day on the coast, in a relatively touristy place would ease us into the trip a bit more gently.  In fact, we ended up staying at Tolu for two days to help Kory to fight his stomach bug.

The hostel that we stayed in was really nice, had lots of outdoor chill out areas and hammocks and you could see the sea from the roof top hang out area.  Kory spent a lot of time resting up and I used my free time to write my journal and make it into a blog.  The hostel also had a well-equipped kitchen, so we made lots of smoothies and tuna-cheese melts to refuel ourselves.  So far most of the food available here tends to be what you can get back at home, you could go out for a pizza, burger and chips and sometimes even an Indian curry.  Also, the price for going out to a restaurant for dinner is similar to doing this at home.  Therefore we have been happy to mainly cook our own food, to ensure it is cooked properly and to just eat out when we something a bit more unusual.

We spent a bit of time walking around the town and along the seafront area.  Everyone in the town seems to get about on bicycles, and lots of them are decorated with umbrellas, flowers and pictures.  We saw one woman who was cycling on a normal bike but she had two children balanced along the crossbar; they seemed perfectly happy of course.  I suppose it didn’t look any stranger than the family of five who were ALL sitting on one motorbike who rode past us as we walked back to the hostel.

After a good rest stop it seems like we are ready to head off again.  My journal and blog are up to date, we have checked out the maps for our next few days of riding, we have cleaned all the sand/slush off our bikes again and by the sounds of things Kory’s belly must be feeling better, because he appears to trust that he can fart again!  From tomorrow we head inland and up towards Medellin!

Don't forget that when your Spanish lets you down you can use the universal language of gesticulation, or say it in English in a Spanish accent and hope you're near enough!! Take care, hasta la vista y bueno suerte mis amigos
