Sunday I arrived in Cuenca (Large city in the south of Ecuador) on an understanding that a border crossing to Peru in a couple of days is possible with the documents I now have.
Not so. New information suggest to return to Quito. Great. 10 hours on the bus to backtrack.
Here is where it goes from bad to worse.
The Canadian Embassy finally came through and said they could get me an emergency exit in 3-4 days (No AUS embassy here but Canada can officially help aussies)
Checking in to a hostal across the road from the embassy I was none too pleased to discover my bag stolen from the entrance during check-in!!!!! This bag (some 22kg´s) represents basically everything else that I had except for my wallet (which has my visa card, phew!).
So, with the clothes on my back and a visa card and no energy to enjoy myself I returned to the Canadian Embassy with the completed documents.
Explaining the situation I was pleased to find someone cared. Rachel (Embassy) was going to do her best to arrange for an exit in 24 hours to Lima, Peru.
Now to report the stolen bag.......5 hours and 6 police stations later until a Policeman (Senor Moran) finally wanted to care about taking a report! Senor Moran was very helpful. As to the other police stations´ well they did nothing to change my comments in my earlier updates. They are extremely disappointing!
Hopefully tomorrow (Wednesday local) I am out of this shit country and re-enter my second favourite country, Peru. Behind Australia of course.
I can stay with a friend there for as long as I need to get all this shit sorted out.
As to those of you who sent messages of support or concern or with information, I thank you. As to those of you that sent funny comments or jokes, quite frankly I am not in the mood at the moment. Maybe I can laugh about it one day much further down the track.
Right now I just want out of Ecuador.
