What I did
London Heathrow Airport
On the flight from Chicago to London Heathrow Airport we were aboard a Boeing 777....huge plane...and for a flight that lasted 13 hours (ok, not really that long if you don't count the hours jumping forward faster than you can....it was closer to 7 hrs and 40 minutes) after the whole thing with the TSA lady telling us nothing to eat, blah, blah, blah.......weeeel, they served us supper anyway..nice little chicken and rice number with a salad....and then they preceded to shut off the lights and close all the window shades,,,,,,we traveled a bit North up near Montreal, so didn't even get over ocean until after dark.....dad gum-it!!!! So now I can say I have flown over the ocean, however I still have no claim to actually ever SEEING the ocean! We did end up getting about 4 hours sleep on the plane to try and off set the whole flying overnight/6 hour time difference situation we knew we would be facing.
After arriving at Heathrow we had exactly 1 hour to make our connecting flight to Edinburgh....which we did....barely.
The UK border control is rigorous and slow moving......after showing our passports and having them scanned, we had to go through TSA again....then go through border control. They wanted our full itinerary, numbers where we could be reached, what we were doing here, etc. we hauled ass up the stairs and found our gate....much to our dismay no one was there.....we thought we missed the flight but the ladies working called the pilot and they waited for us! Apparently there were others who were scheduled on that flight who didn't make it....we were told that was a common occurrence in Heathrow. That 1 hour connect just doesn't allow time to get through the entire screening process. We were served breakfast on the flight from Heathrow to Edinburgh It was actually quite yummy! Oh! And some wonderful tea, best I ever tasted!!
We got to our hotel and the accommodations are to die for! Wonderful people, beautiful rooms and lots of tea!! We walked the royal mile taking pictures and checking out all the little shops, and yes....we did stop in a couple of pubs for a quick drink!
We had our supper at the world famous World's End Cafe. We tried Black Pudding with goat's cheese and chutney and of course we ate Steak and Ale Pie!!! Delicious!! The waitress ask us what we would like to drink and we were like..."umm....what do you recommend?" Of course she recommended the beer of the day! After telling us it was Orkney Island Dark and that Orkneys have weird beer, she proceeded to call Amanda "hard-core" for trying it...We LIKED it :)
After returning to our room, we were needless to say pretty whipped from the day.....a good nights rest and we will be up and running early tomorrow!!
