I drove from San Diego early and made my way up to LA via Orange County. I stopped on Newport beach to get over my hangover and catch some rays. The area is really nice with some amazing houses. I then made my way up to Santa Monica to have a look at the pier etc. I ended up staying the night which cost me close to $100 thanks to a stupid cop giving me a parking ticket for being parked after reversing into a bay. I have a few issues with this, 1. He said it was dangerous to pull out onto oncoming traffic and it is safer to reverse out. (huh) 2. I was in a parking lot with no other cars up there to be oncomming traffic. 3. it was 7am! What a joke. I have visual evidence of my offending position and the beautiful car i have managed to blag.

Santa Monica is very nice with a great shopping boulevard which looks like the Prom in Chelt. but longer. I stayed just one night and went up to the pacific highway coast road via Beverley Hills and Bell Air. I got lost in Bell Air as the roads are mad and all the houses are the same, mansions. One rd called Mulholland Drive goes right up to the top of the hills and is the most impossible road to get off. Behind schedule i decided to head straight to Santa Barbera and stop for a few nights. This turned out to be a good decision as it was thriving with student activity. I got to know a local bar manager and fired in a load of free drink. I met some lads in the dorm and headed out with them both nights and met some interesting people. The most interesting being the local girls who buy you drinks and lavish attention on you because of your accent. It was the most confidence building exercise imaginable. With the fun over i then made my way to Monterey and Carmel however there were no beds available so i had to make a late night drive to San Jose, or Saratoga to be precise, a small village in a national park. I spent the nite in a lovely log cabin with deer and racoons scuttling around. Unexpected but good to see. After being turfed out at 9am for cleaning i went over to Santa Cruz for some sun, but clouds soon sent me to San Francisco where i am just settling in.

Driving has been great fun and the roads are an experience. The Pacific Highway through the mountains is awesome and places like LA and San Francisco are scary times. I ll be in touch with San Fran details when i get to Vegas. 10 days left.
