After driving round in circles - literally - by the time we eventually parked in Maastrict we knew its ring road very well.  The first car park we tried to find using the Tom Tom no longer existed, so we decided to follow the road signs for "Centre East" open air parking.  We followed these carefully for several km and then they simply vanished to be replaced by signs for parking "Centre West"...  On the second lap we decided that the signs must relate to the on street parking that we had passed rather than to a particular car park, and so pulled over when we saw a space that looked large enough.

We were drawn towards a large street with market stalls in the centre, which was fortunate as it turned out to be the correct way.  Maastrict centre was an interesting blend of huge squares lined with cafes and restaurants, and small streets and alleys packed with shops and yet more eateries.  In one of the main squares, called Vrijthof which also contained two huge churches and a display of colourful statues (see photos), they were busy setting up for some kind of concert - unfortunately we didn't have time to stay and see the performance.
