And the four major hills along the route proved to be fun and allowed us to stretch our legs. In fact, for some of us, the testosterone got out of hand, and we charged up the hills as fast as we could! There seems to be a bit of competition for 'King of the Mountain', and although Trevor 'Butticus' Hamersley put on his pokka dot jersey for the day, the honours rested with young Nick and I, with Alex and Luke not far behind (notwithstanding Kevin's effort, who we gave almost a kilometre start on the last big hill into Burra). Marcus on his faithful steed 'Milton' gave a credible performance, coming in on most hills after the first four riders
Burra is a lovely rural town with a lot of historical buidings. Part of the town is set on the side of a hill with nice views of the surrounding contryside and the town itself. We will have a better look tomorrow on our rest day.
Yvonne wore the white jersey with distinction today, and handed it over tonight to Trevor (Canberra) for the ride to Waikerie (123kms) on Monday. It was good to see Trevor back in the saddle again today, and he really enjoyed his 60kms before getting back on the bus - discretion the better part of valour!
The Uniting Church put on a sumptuous meal for us which was very welcome after the day's ride.
As mentioned, tomorrow is a rest day - time for washing, maintenance to the bikes and relaxation before the next five days riding. From Monday we will pass through Waikerie, Paringa, Renmark, Balranald and Hay. We have covered 2,633kms to date. Yay!
Tomorrow is also Father's Day, which reminds me more acutely of home. Although I am enjoying the adventure, I am missing Veronica, and also the more regular contact with Pete, Kathryn and Mike. So a big hello to them, and also to all my friends and supporters.
Watch out for the next installment of Gatzby's (and Marcus Maximus's) great bike adventure.
