After arriving in Chongqing aboard President I, we toured the city before catching a late afternoon flight to Xian.
Many claim Chongqing to be the world’s largest city with 40 million people. However, a little research shows Chongqing way down the list of large cities with around 4 million people; presumably this discrepancy has to do with where one draws the lines of the city limits. In any event, Chongqing’s downtown urban area (the only part we saw), is cluttered and busy, but clean and pretty. It’s beautiful setting in sharply defined hills overlooking the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. Its plethora of bridges and tunnels reminded me a little of San Francisco. The beautiful day we had during our visit belied the fact that the city is stricken with 260 days of fog each year.
During the brief time we had, we visited the National Palace and Museum, the museum of General Stilwell and the Flying Tigers and, most memorably, the zoo.
You are not human if you don’t think Giant Pandas are the most lovable things on Earth. They are very cool. Ranking right up there, though, is its cousin, the Red Panda. The Red Panda looks like a big cat with a large, bushy tail and luscious red fur---definitely pet-worthy!
