6th - 12th July:

Bus took ages and got on the last day boat to the island so didn't land until about 2030. We hadbeen told we could get a taxi to our proposed beach but alas no this was not possible so we had to get a boat from Haad Rin which is the main party area of Ko Phangan, where the full moon party takes place. Unfortunately when we got there we could see no sign of any boats and we were told that they had stopped running, albeit it by local accommodation operators that were trying to convince us to part with 40 pounds for a room for the night, approximately 10 times what we have got used to paying, and almost our entire daily budget! The high prices were because the full moon party was 3 days away. As we prepared ourselves for a night on the beach I caught sight of a boat coming into shore and to our delight would happily take us round to our chosen, cheaper beach for a princely 4 quid each, in your face Haad Rin con artists!

The beach was verty quiet, no lights except in a yoga retreat at one end, again out of our price range, but we managed to wake some people up at Beam bungalows and hunkered down for the night, it would be temporary because the place looked dead and the beach was decidedly crap. Next day we got up early and explored the 2 adjoining beaches and found a great place on a semi busy beach but it was beautiful, nice sandy beach and what would turn out to be a legendary restaurant. The only thing missing was a hammock so I quickly purchased one and hooked it up, with a little help from by trusty swiss army knife which I used to discreetly saw some notches into the timber posts, and I was set!

Spent most of the next few days swimming and reading endless books in my hammock but also managed to do and see the following:

Ang crapped herself when a bright red snake went over her sandals as we went down the steps. Saw a few lizards as well, including a big one about a metre long mincing about outside our bungalow blissfully unaware of our presence. Luckily no locals saw it otherwise they would probably have eaten the poor thing. UNfortunately the smaller ones were able to get in our hut as it had holes everywhere, and we kept finding tiny lizard poo's on our bed whenever we went out. On the last night we had a storm which kept me up all night and I satrted getting paranoid, was sure I could see giant lizards hanging off the walls in the shadows. At one point I was convinced I could see a monkey so was continuously getting my maglight out and scanning the room deleriously! Also saw a parrot but that belonged to the restaurant, he never flew away though.

Discovered a local restaurant that did brilliant peanut butter toast, had breakfast there everyday. Along with the yellow curry I had literally everynight I was pretty much set.

Got major sunburnt again, though it was largely deliberate, just trying to fill in some of the white spots, eg my back and sandal strap marks.

Went on a major trek to Haad rin but went wrong way, 1hr walk turned to 3hr jungle hike on 70 degree slopes in the blistering heat, more sunburn.

Went to full moon party, lasted about 3 hrs and got bored, getting too old for this. Possibly drunk too much vodka beforehand!

Saw loads of films, more swimming, more curry, amuzed ourselves for hours chucking a tennis ball to one another in the sea, simple pleasures! On the whole a great way to finish our South East Asia section where we have been travelling pretty quickly most of the time.

On the 12th got on the boat back to mainland and an overnight bus to Bangkok.

13th-14th July 09:

Sorting out stuff in Bangkok, like making sure we are sat together on the flight to Sydney for a change and some last minute bargain shopping. Sydney here we come!

Mate!

Too old for a full moon party! You absolute lord! Dig deep and remember the days at Kaos night club when we used to run a book on what time you would collapse on the floor (still have a fag burn scar somewhere, wierd how you managed to stub your fag out on me almost two muinutes after falling down..;-))
Nice tattoo man, makes mine look like Calum has eaten a pack of crayons and then puked on my arm whilst asleep in the sun!
Is this you now off to Oz for the finale? Or are you coming back first?
Time is flying man! half way through July already!
Off on our travels Friday! (well, a week in Greece cos it was cheaper than Butlins, but still, keep an eye out for my blog LOL)
Any wedding bells yet JAMPOO>?
News from Blighty - gonna have a little boy - shall be named Kirran (would have been Ruth if a girl)
Seriously hope it has Archna's nose, however the Ruthen Conk gene seems surpisingly resiliant.
Got appraisal on Thursday (when they tell me that I would be given a massive pay rise if it werent for the economy)

BIG LOVE TO ANGE

peace and war
