1st - 5th July 09:

Went to Railay with the intention to do some climbing as it is known as one of the very best places to climb in the whole world, and one of the most stunning beach locations in Thailnd. It was both and we were both stunned into silence with the jaw dropping beauty of the limestone cliffs and white sand beaches we saw as the longboat brought us round the coast from Railay, boat is the only available way to get here which makes it even more remote.

I kept going on about doing a 3 day climbing course, despite the fact that I had only climbed once before, on an indoor wall with the cubs when I was about 8 yrs old, and hated it. Ang was like "how about we just do one day and see how it goes?" Ang of course has been climbing indoors for about 2 years but I was convinced I would be up for the 3 days. We did the climbing with a company called sea cliffs (guide Em) who had been recommended to us by Jamie & Anna in Pai and after about 3 hours and 4 climbs I was regretting booking just 1 day, let alone if we had booked 3. Most people were doing just a morning of it and I was beginning to see why, I was shattered, I felt like my arms were about to fall off, that and I was terrible at it. I managed to get a few climbs under my belt to about 20-30 metres I guess but Ang did probably more than double that. I did quite enjoy most of it but I think I need to get some indoor stuff behind me before I try this again, I was out of my depth! The views were stunning though, especially as we abseilled out of a cave about 70m above the sea. Apart from spending 3 days recovering from the climbing (I tore my left hand up a treat) we also did the following:

Noticed there were a load of gender benders here, half way through the process, must be a clinic nearby!

Saw some amazing sunsets, no sunrises though too early!!

Hiked to the backpacker/Climbers beach for the crack, noone there! low season.

Saw loads of wild monkeys, families of them everywhere.

Went diving for a day, saw a couple of baby sharks among other things.

Ate a few BBQ's, visited some caves

Watched a live Muay Thai fight in a ring set up in one of the beach side bars. Was quite a good fight, great to watch in our ringside seats. What was also great to watch was a geezer throwing fire sticks about and playing a didgeridoo (not at the same time), and watching a drunk European idiot, I would guess German, get lairy with a little thai bar man bloke and call him out into the ring. Unfortunately it all cooled down as I was hoping he would get a beating, I almost called him out myself but he was a 20 stone brick s*** house and even in his condition would have destroyed me.

After all this activity it was time for some proper relaxation time so off we trotted to Koh Phangan on the East coat of Thailand, naturally about a 14 hour round trip!
