Myanmar is a small place these days when it comes to travellers. At Yangon's spankingly brand new airport, I hooked up with two Canadian blokes, Shawn and Olivier, and a Korean, Bin, to share a taxi to downtown Yangon. Although I ended up opting for another hotel (Three Seasons, rather than White House), this was not the last time, or the last place I'd be seeing the gents. Oliver later popped up in Bagan, Bin in Nyaungschwe and Shawn I saw on my last day in Yangon, and we were both on the same flight back to Bangkok.

And what about this for a coincidence? When doing my research on Myanmar, reading up on the Lonely Planet Thorntree Forum, I saw an entry by some guy called Matt, who would be arriving on the same day as I would, and I was halfway through writing a reply to see if we could hook up, when I realised I would have to login, and I just couldn't be bothered.

But on day 2 in Yangon, wandering in (clockwise) circles around the Schwedagaon Paya, I didn't just bump into Olivier, and Caroline, a French Moscow-based girl staying at my hotel, but also an English guy... called Matt, who just happened to be staying at the White House (yep, same one where Olivier, Shawn and Bin were staying). As it just happened to be Caroline's birthday, and it would have been a rather dull birthday without a party, we ended up going out for a drink, the five of us.

Conclusion of the evening: Yangon has a very weird restaurant on Anawratha Road, with a 30 metre runway for the (fully clad, honest Mum!) dinner entertainers singing western songs with Burmese lyrics.

And Myanmar Beer isn't bad at all.
