Today was the day of another long drive (about 300 km) firstly up the coast from Dunedin and then darting inland to the center of South Island to the Southern Alps for my new base at Lake Tekapo. The coast drive was quite boring but the inland trip was very beautiful, snow capped mountains became ever closer as I reached my destination.
Lake Tekapo is located at the Southern end of its namesake lake and has fantastic views across turquoise water to the snow capped mountains behind. After checking into my hostel I took a trip up Mt John for stunning 360 degree views. They have also got an observatory up there as apparently this is one of the best places on earth for stargazing.
So this will be my new base for the next couple of days, tomorrow im off to have a look at the highest mountain in NZ at Mt Cook which should be great and the Highlanders play their first game of the season tonight in the stadium I visited yesterday so that will be well worth a watch later at the local Tavern.
