Now I have been very lucky so far with the weather on my 4 or so months on the road and cant think of a time that the weather has so far has intervened to stop me from doing something planned so I guess it was waiting to happen.
The forecast wasn't great today following fantastic weather since I landed in NZ but I set off never the less on the Te Anau - Milford Highway on the 120 km journey to Milford Sound.
Even accounting for the rain, clouds and poor visibility the journey was spectacular with many great view point stops along the way
Stopped at Mirror Lakes to see the mountains reflecting in the still clear waters and then at Chasm walk where the immense force of water had eroded the vast boulders in the river bed. Then through Homer tunnel, 1200m long mined out of granite it took 20 years to complete and the road here is one way controlled by traffic lights with a 15 minute hold time !
Milford Sound emerged from the gloom soon after but it quickly became apparent that a boat trip today would be out of the question, £40 would be too much for a trip with very limited visibility. So after a short while looking around the mouth of the sound I headed back knowing that there would always be a next time.
