Where I stayed

Well my time in Malaysia was never going to be long enough but I really wanted to cram in another stop before my trip down to Singapore so I planned a couple of days stop over in Melaka.

Melaka is the historical capital of Malaysia and played a big part in shaping the country. It has largely managed to retain a lot of its original buildings and charm unlike KL in the North. The city was a major trading port of great significance in the early years of trading and it was the Portuguese in the 16 Century that first developed the port and its fortifications, some of those original buildings still remain. Through the years many different countries ruled here including the Dutch and Britain, we always poke our nose in somewhere down the line !

I took a flight down from Penang to KL and then a bus into Melaka, only had 2 nights here so only around 1.5 days of exploring but that was enough to get a good feel for the town. Most of the sights are very walkable and the the town really has some very beautiful old buildings and reminded me a bit of Hoi An in Vietnam. Like Hoi An however the town is blighted by too many tourists cramming into the small streets with traffic trying to get past, they really should ban all traffic in world heritage towns it would make them so more enjoyable to spend time in. I spent most of my time dodging both traffic and annoying Chinese tour parties. They really are a strange breed, they swarm around in groups of about 10 all wearing the same stupid fucking hats dominating the streets, some of them with massive umbrellas, cuz they hate the sun and not really caring that they have a potential weapon that can have peoples eye's out !.

Well enough of my rant, I did enjoy my stay here, what also makes Malaysia special for me is the food and Melaka is the food capital of the region. It was great trying lots of different foods that I haven’t had before, the local Nonya food here is especially excellent.
