Short flight down to Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon as I prefer to call it, today and I'm out and about today exploring the capital.

This place is very different to Hanoi, it’s the commercial centre of the country and has over the last few years become quite cosmopolitan. Like Hanoi its buzzing with frantic activity but I prefer it in a lot of ways as the city feels more open and spacious than the narrow streets of Hanoi’s old town, The ciiy has experienced a very chequered past and has suffered greatly over the years firstly during French rule and then when the Yanks came to town during the Vietnam war. The period of French rule has certainly influenced a lot of stunning architecture particularly the imposing Notre Dame Cathedral, peoples committee building and municipal theatre. The city also boasts some famous hotel, notably the Rex and Continental. After a morning walking I was tired so I ventured to HCMC Hard Rock Café for a few beers and a T shirt was also bought.

The evening was spent very enjoyably with Cecilla and Chris, a lovely couple from Canada I had met in Cat Ba and another couple they had met on their travels to the Mekong Delta.

Ive booked a 2 day tour to the Mekong Delta tomorrow which I’m really looking forward to, should be fascinating.
