Not having the energy for another long journey we decided to break up the journey by changing overnight in Ruteng. - a generic mountain town.

This time we hired a vehicle, which turned out to be a nice comfortable car! - didnt even know they existed in Indonesia.

Again, driving along we were in complete awe of the scenery outside the window. The trans-Flores highway is one amazing road. It passes through banana fields, rice terraces, then winds up the hills past amazing vistas of mountains and extinct volcanoes, then past coffee plantations, through small villages - where the locals all shout 'Hey Mister!' and wave - then down through canyons, over rivers and past waterfalls. Often we would have to slow right down as the tar-mac ends or a cow, pig, dog, buffalo runs across the road. All this jaw-dropping beauty also means that the road is probably one of the most bendy in the world. It sometimes looks like, in the construction of the road they just 'built around' everything. "Here is a 6ft ditch, shall we fill it in, or we could just put in another hairpin bend. Its the only road where we've been driving N,S,E,W in every 5 min period of time.
