We've travelled up to the tip of the North Island.  Paihia and the bay of islands.  It's pretty sweet up here, very beautiful and alot of history to go along with it.  That's one thing about New Zealand I wasn't really expecting.  I was thinking of it like Australia, basically European, mostly just another British/Irish settled country, but it's not like that at all.  New Zealand is Maori country, and the Europeans here are just guests.  Were the the Aboriginals in Australia got shafted COMPLETELY, the Maoris fought back and their culture survived.

Paihia happens to be where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed on the 6th Feb 1840.  All the Maori trbies got together and signed a treaty with the Crown.  This basically made New Zealand a British colony, and is regarded today as the founding of New Zealand as a nation.

We took a dolphin watching tour around the Bay, and the grey buggers were out in force.  It's winter here, so it's quite cold, especially out on the ocean.  Not sure If I'm looking forward to the South Island, as it's famous for being freezing this time of year.
