Ok, so here we are. Finally the one thing in South America that I really wanted to see- The Nazca Lines. We'd travelled all through the night from Ariquipa to get here at 6 in the morning so we could be flying over the lines on a wee twin engine plane by 7 and then straight to Lima to catch our flight to Chile. We didn't have time to stay over, or see the town of Nazca itself, or even stop for lunch, we couldn't afford to miss our flight to Santiago. For once things went according to plan and we arrived with plenty of time to spare.

Now, for those of you that don't know what the Nazca Lines are: Shame on you! I'll go through it one more time, so you better be writing this down!

The Nazca Lines are an engima. No one has proof who built them or why. Since their discovery, the Nazca Lines have inspired fantastic explanations from sign posts to ancient gods, a landing strip for returning aliens, a celestial calendar created by the ancient Nazca civilization, a map of underground water supplies or bored art students.

They cover nearly 400 square miles of desert. Etched in the surface of the desert pampa sand about 300 hundred geometric shapes. These straight lines are apparently the earlier work of the Nazca people. As the years went on they created more elaborate images such as monkeys, spiders, a blue whale, and even a human figure, which some say is an alien. These drawings took hundreds of years to make, and incredibly, because they can only really be seen from the air, they were only rediscovered in 1939.

So the question still remains, why were they created? We watched a video about the lines before we flew over them, and the most excepted theory is that the images were part of rituals aimed at appeasing the gods or asking for help with a good supply of water. This doesn't make sense to me because the images took so long to create. If water was in demand, then how could they spend 2/3 generations asking the Gods for help? But this is just one theory. In the video we were shown footage of Shamens in Amazonian tribes taking L.S.D. and many archaeologists say that the Nazca Shamens did the same and could "fly" over the lines and see them from above. Again I reckon this is bollocks.

Another thoery is of course that the Nazca images are primative communication signs with Aliens. People point to the figure called the Spaceman or Astronaut as proof of alien contact. There's one carving called "Hands" with shows one human hand with 5 fingers, and one "alien" hand with 3. Interesting but, I'm not convinced.

After flying over the lines and seeing them for myself, I now know what thy they were created. For finding your way home when drunk. "Turn left at the big fcuk off Spider, you can't miss it!
