I was supposed to stay in Chicago for 2 days, maybe 3 at the most, but ended up staying over a week.  And what a great week it was.  Elly and Kit entertained me by getting drunk a lot, karoke, movie marathons and music gigs.  Kit is a bass player in a band, so on Friday night we went to watch her play.  Dave and Kerri-Anne came too which was cool, two old friends from school who are now married and living in Chicago.  Kits gig was good, but after the first band played a fire marshal turned up (with a big fucking gun obviously- this is America) and ordered half the people out of the bar because it was over capacity.  We did the normal Northern Irish thing and completely ignored him, so we got to stay and finally see the rest of the show.

The next day Dave and I went round to his friends house to watch the Liverpool match (another disappointing draw), and then we went on a Leo Sayer.  We were drinking for about 12 until closing time, and it was a pretty fun day considering I spent a weeks budget.

So after a week with Elly I went downtown to stay with Dave and Kerri-Anne for a few days and that was great criac too, especially because of their dog, Barney.  Dave lives at the top of an apartment building near Navy Pier with spectacular views of the city, so I've stayed in worse places.

One of the reasons I stayed so long in Chicago is because I wasn't sure what to do next.  My plan was to rent a car here, drive it across the country visiting people/places along the way, then fly home from San Francisco.  To hire a car here is pretty cheap, but unfortunately to return the car to a different city cost an extra thousand dollars.
WFT?!

An extra grand to drop it off in a different location.  This totally threw me, I didn't know what to do.  Not only do I need a car for getting from A to B, but I was planning on sleeping in it to save money.  Just getting from city to city in the US is about 100 bucks a go, so I couldn't afford to do that either.  Then Dave suggested I see how much it would be to change my flight home to Chicago instead of San Francisco.  The man's a genius.  Sometimes.  It was only $80 to change not only my flight but the date as well, so now I'm staying an extra week and I can rent a car here in Chicago and return it 3 weeks later.  I can also visit my friend Burke in Indiana which wasn't a possibility without a car.  Sometimes everything just works out. :)
