Flag of Italy  , Sicily,
Monday, March 19, 2012

We arrived in Palermo around 6pm and it was almost dark. We quickly realised that the city is worse than Hillbrow in Johannesburg in certain areas (thanks to a road closure due to a street carnival and the GPS) and a really smart Mediterranean sea-side city only a few blocks away.

The mix of cultures due to the city's historic occupation by so many different nations is very apparent with over a hundred and fifty churches in a 20-block radius.

We were pleasantly surprised by our B&B / hostel for the night (www.aivicere.com). Well equipped, clean and pretty much in centre of the old town.

We spent the day exploring the city's sights, sounds and markets for the day. We then caught the 8pm ferry across to Naples because it worked out cheaper and quicker than driving back through Sicily and up the boot of Italy. We were supposed to arrive at 8am, only to be awoken from our cabin at 06h00 because we'd made good time during the night. It was then onto Barrea in the mountains!

 Ciao, Gaz
