What I did
Hung out with Tanya's Family
It's official - China has the BEST food. We have just spent the last 3 nights with Wendy's friend Tanya and her family. They have pampered us and shown us such gracious hospitality. The last 3 days has felt like Thanksgiving for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The weather has been rainy, but that's OK - the food and company more than make up for it.
We are sad to leave and wish we could spend a few more days here. Tanya and her family have been so helpful and friendly. China is a tough place to travel because of the language barrier - but here, we have a whole family that makes sure we are well fed, comfortable and safe. They have bent over backwards to make sure our visit has been a great one.
The best part is that we don't have to think about anything. We just tag along. They take us to the best restaurants, order various different types of food. We don't look at a menu, we just sit there and watch plate after plate of food arrive at the table and we get to sample everything! It's hard to try new things when you are just two people. We have always wanted to try frog, but are scared to order a big plate of it in case we don't like it. But here - we get to try everything, much to the amusement of our hosts. Tanya's family is very impressed with Garry's chopstick skills (Wendy...not so much). If we don't like something new, we can just eat something different - but we pretty much liked everything....except maybe cow stomach.... Oh, and by the way - frog is delicious!
Tanya and her cousins took us for a fabulous foot massage one evening after dinner. We also we to see the sights in Liuzhou - considering we've had such raining weather our pictures turned out pretty decent.
Tanya has been a huge help. She has taught us how to say, dumplings, pork, steam buns, beer, delicious, I'm full, I'm hungry, thank-you. We figure we can pretty much get through China with that.
We feel like we are home for a visit, just like Tanya. We are at her house right now drinking coffee and using the computer - we wonder if we can get a load of laundry in before we go.....
We have been trying to convince Tanya to come with us to Yangshou, but she says we need to leave the nest and try to figure out China on our own. Who is going to order food for us?
