We headed to Pulau Pangkor which means "beautiful island" and is described by the Lonely Planet as a "white sand paradise par excellence".....hummm...maybe once upon a time, but they have literally dug up the beach and poured concrete retaining walls and concrete foundations for the new "shops" so locals can hawk their wares.  And no, we are not kidding.  The beach at Teluk Nipah which is described in the guide book as one of the nicest stretches of sandy beach on the island is currently a concrete construction site (see pics).

Why?  Not sure....the locals seem pissed about it.  It doesn't make any sense to destroy the one thing the island has going for it.  Most of the locals speculate that there is some government shenanigans going on - sounds plausible. And more shops?  Seriously, the island was a ghost town when we were there with most of the shops and restaurants closed up.  We had to rent a motorcycle each day just to drive into the main town to get a decent bite to eat.

And as for our accommodation.....well, even though we were one of 4 guests staying at the entire resort, we were put into a cockroach invested old hut - and we are pretty sure it also had bed bugs.  Why did we stay here you ask?  Well we didn't realize the extent of the full infestation until later that night when all the creepy crawlies came out to play.  So after killing several bugs of different varieties and sizes we asked to see the nice brand new rooms that were just built at the resort.  Needless to say we got off our wallets and shelled out the extra $3 a night.  We think we dodged a bed bug bullet that night.

Other than that we just read, sun tanned on a beach further down the island and avoided the monkeys.

No Garry........it is Hawaii Five-O that is coming back...not CHIPS! I realize you two have been without civilization for quite sometime!

Man, Garry you look like one of the Village People....

Hey, if I am a tourist, I don't want get up to walk more than 4 feet to buy Sunglasses or Nyke sandals. Concrete reminds me of home - so they are doing the right thing. Kill all the wildlife - because they make noise. And paint the locals faces white. Just the way I like it. Yes, I am being sarcastic.
