Where I stayed
Kanawa Beach Resort

After a few hot sweaty days in dirty Labuanbajo we needed to retreat to an island for some beach time.  You would think that Labuanbajo would have a beach considering it is right on the coast, but it is really just a big port town with garbage everywhere and dumpy expensive rooms with very basic amenities.  Luckily you can hop on a boat and go to a deserted island not far from shore (1.5 hrs by boat).  We chose Kanawa Island which has a pretty secluded beach with great offshore snorkeling.  Garry was able to snap underwater pictures to his hearts content and Wendy got some beach time.  Just beyond the reef there was suppose to be turtles, but there were also sharks and lion fish (one of the most venomous fish in the ocean), so Garry kept close to shore, and Wendy stayed the hell out of the water.

As a side note, a guy from Barcelona that was also staying on the island encountered a turtle and followed him for 4 or 5 mins until the turtle brought him to another turtle that was tied to buoy about 6 meters from the surface.  The turtle dragged him by the line for several meters while he was trying to cut the line - eventually he was able to set the turtle free (our hero!).

The resort itself was very basic.  The best way to describe it is to compare it with camping.  You got a bed with a mosquito net and the toilet facilities......well there is a picture - you be the judge.  Sort of like an outhouse.  It was nice enough place, but two days were plenty.  We couldn't get over the number of people staying there for a week or more.  Some people wanted to stay past their reservation so slept on the beach just so they could stay longer.  Let's just say there is no way in hell we would pay $25 a night to sleep on a beach and get eaten by mosquitoes.  And there were HUNDREDS of mosquitoes.  Wendy was bitten alive and bitter at Garry who didn't even get ONE bite.  I guess Wendy is the sweet one.

Oh yeah - and there was a couple from Paris on the island that honest to god walked around in their underwear the WHOLE time they were there.  Yup, that's right - not swim suits, underwear - gross!  The guy would literally strip down to his underwear in front of everybody to have dinner - so hygienic!  I guess he just thinks he looks that good.

Our boat ride back from the island to the mainland was a brush with death.   They crammed 14 people onto a tiny tub (this was not the boat we arrived on).  Before getting on Wendy demanded 2 life jackets (the only 2 on the boat by the way).  The boat motor sounded like machine gun fire and exhaust fumes choked us the whole way.  So here we sat on the boat with ear plugs, shirts over our faces, squeezing onto our life jackets for 2 hours. Hoping our next boat trip to Komodo (6 hours later) would be a better experience.

Awesome pics. When can Wendy take me! With all your knowledge, you need to start consulting on vacations over there!

Seriously Wendy... you need to give up on being a tax accountant when you get home and become a writer. I think you've found your calling!
