The drive to Kelowna was quite a bit longer than expected (5 hrs), so we pretty much arrived, ate and crashed in anticipation for visiting the wineries Kelowna had to offer the next day. Our initial view of Kelowna was it was like Hastings with it's bogans and boy racers, so we weren't expecting too much here.
We never knew Canada made wine and were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. We had been drinking the local variety in restaurants so decided we should visit some of these wineries in person. We started off at Mission Hill Winery where we purchased a bottle of their Pinot Grigio and then headed to Quails Gate where we also stayed for lunch. The food and wine we had was fantastic and Alanna has been ordering the Quail's Gate Chardonnay every opportunity since. Both Mission Hill and Quails Gate have NZ links (Mission Hill's wine maker is a kiwi and Quail's Gate's wine maker worked with Ata Rangi for a while). We went to a few other wineries in the area but these two were definitley the best. Next day we decided to view Summer Hill Winery and Cedar Creek prior to departing for Vancouver as these had also been given good reviews. These were worthwhile with Cedar Creek being the better of the two. Fortunately we are not able to shop otherwise Alanna would have purchased half of Cedar Creeks gift shop which had lots of kitchen and home type products.
