Venus to Rome
Up early this morning to pack up and
get away. Caught the vaporetto to Santa Lucia station and the
expensive (74 Euro) Eurostar to Roma Termini. Our hotel in Rome is
The Assissi. It is relatively cheap for Rome at E70 per night B&B.
And quite good for the price. Aircon that’s fairly quiet ( a must
at 35C) sheets on the bed (rather than just a doona) and a
respectable breakfast. The bathroom is tiny, not much room to thread
ones legs around the various appliances, but OK for one at a time.
We walked around the Forum area and I
found that really interesting. One can walk almost all around from
the elevated footpath and roads around the site and look down on the
various temples, arches and other buildings. I suspect that this is
a better view for an initial look than paying 12 E each to walk
amongst the ruins in the blazing sun. In the area we also found
Trajan's column and the Piazza Campidoglia by Michelangelo with the
equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. Behind this is the incredible
memorial to Victor Emmanual II in full late afternoon sun.
Alison was running out of puff at this
stage (dehydration) so we slowly trudged back to our hotel along Via
Nationale, which seems to be a major retail street. Traffic was
blocked off at one stage for what looked like a state funeral. We
stopped for tea at a cafe in Via Nationale but it turned out very
ordinary. At least it wasn't particularly expensive.
