Giles:  So now we're in Shanghai.  Missing Nanjing a little bit (mainly as this hostel doesn't have a cat!) as it's a massive difference from pretty Nanjing to enter this city full of skyscrapers and people... lots and lots of people.  Walking down East Nanjing Road (the main shopping district) was a task in itself - peopel literally crammed and it was going at a snail's pace.  Approached every minute by people trying to whisk us into stores selling fake stuff down an alley - quite dodgy!  Still, we went for it and got ushered into a little room no bigger than a bedroom where six big Chinese guys in suits stood watching us.  They shut the door behind us too and the lock on that door looks like it belonged in a bank's vault.  Nice stuff inside though, Sam got a bargain, a Gucci bag at just under 24 quid!  At the end of the day we had the feeling we needed to buy something... just a good thing Sam loved that bag.  It's my turn next!  In contrast money wise, we spent 12 quid on Subway for lunch as we needed something a bit comforting, so 24 quid on a Gucci bag really was a bargain.

Our last day in Nanjing was superb - went to the local national park.  Beautiful day for it too.  It's the Purple-Gold mountain Zhongshang (I think) park.  Intriguing name, but after climbging the Linggu Pagoda to the top (eight storeys) we realised why - all the trees were literally golden and purple, so amazing to see and a brilliant view to boot.  The photos will tell a better story though.

We're here for a few days then heading south to Hangzhou for a few days - it's apparently a lovely rural attraction - so good for a few nights there then south to Macau, the Las Vegas of the East!

Just to add, I had a wake-up call at 6am in Nanjing from the hostel's kitten!  She was stuck in a room next to us and woudln't stop miowing so I had to get the night staff to open up the room to let her out - she woudln't stop purring in my arms for ages!  I miss the wake-up calls from Roofie!

Sam:  Short one from me because im very hungover and feel rotten! Shanghai is different. Its what i imagine new york to look like. Its very strange especially as we've just come from peaceful Nanjing. We have a few days to get used to it though. Last night we met two guys from... Staines!! They knew stanwell moor, the crooked billet, the george! It was very surreal and we ended up having a great night. Paying for it today though so i had to console myself with a new gucci bag. Much to see in Shanghai so ill have more to write about soon. Something funny... Giles got an acute attack of diarhoea while we were out on the streets today and he had to run all the way home. I haven't laughed that much in ages!

Hi you two - lovely pics of the Pagoda in the park at Nanjing! And there was I thinking it was a real mountain!! But, I guess by the time you had got to the top you felt as if you had climbed Mount Everest! And those doves.... I hope you are less hungover now Sam - and Giles, I hope your stomach has settled down! Anyway, take care - we miss you. Love Mum, Susie and Tessa x

Re: it continues....
i'm fine now, used to the local cuisine after having numerous reheated meat type stuff off street vendors. id love to see what EU health and safety would say to that, even most of this country actually

gonna drink a pint of tap water - that will prove my intestinal fortitude!
