Thursday 31st July, 2008, 8:36pm.

So its day 4 in Brunei and my first blog entry. I would have been blogging away from day one if it was not for the lack of an internet connection in the staff house I am staying in. So here I am for 4 weeks... and no clubs, pubs, shopping malls, entertainment. and they dont sell booze here at all. Its a 90% muslim community here so the sale of alcohol is forbidden. shucks. Which brings me to this blog.. a good time killer and therapy for the soul.

So far I have discovered about KB on the north shore of brunei:

- everyone drives like my mum. max speed of 50km/h and they slow down for pedestrians even when they are 10m away from the start of a zebra crossing.

- this place is massively rich in oil. it was literally seeping out of the ground back in the day. when u stand on the shoreline u can see oil platforms everywhere covering the horizon.

- the sultan looks after his peeps. on ramadan day they have a big festival and he gives out $50 notes to people.

- there is free health care in this country... break a leg, no worries!

- you cant point with your index finger, its a religious no no.

- if I wanted to get a cheap massage for $15, it would be a bloke doing it. (and a girl doing it if youre a girl). touching skin of a stranger of the opposite sex, another no no.

- the giant teapot gives a welcoming yet quirky first impression to the place.

- if youre bored and find a toyshop in the middle of nowhere and buy a robot, remember to buy a screwdriver to open the battery compartment.

- they make it clear on the in flight magazine that 'the penalty of smuggling drugs into the country is DEATH', but when you arrive at the airport there is absolutely no baggage check from customs. straight through baby!

- the project manager here has a pool table surrounded by cartoon paintings of dogs playing pool.

And back to the robot, well I bought galaxyman with me for the trip but he has been whining a twiddling his toes complaining about being bored ever since he was separated from mr potatohead back home. so i couldnt resist buying this robot i spotted in a toystore just about an hour ago. only to arrive back like a kid on christmas morning and realise he's smart enough to have organised 8xAA batteries but stupid enough to not have checked out how the battery bay locks up. damn screws.

Reads on the box:

"Agile moves and realistic voices!"

"A warrior that can glide in S-shaped course to attack!"

"Multiple unique programming functions!"

"I have magical power!"

cant wait to pick up a srewdriver tmro.

Im off to do some bedtime reading. Picked up "A New Earth: Awakening to your Life's Purpose" by Eckhart Tolle.

Quote of the day... "You do not become good by trying to be good, but by finding the goodness that is already within you, and allowing that goodness to emerge."

Till next time... cheechos madia hosay mosay

Follower of the giant teapot.

Sunday 3rd August, 2008. 5:01pm.

Went across the border to Malaysia yesterday with my boss to a small town named Miri. Had a beer. Bought some DVDs. Then came back. I was driving so couldnt get plastered... there are supposed to be some good bars to party in Miri but we couldnt find them after circling the whole place a few times. Might stay overnight there next weekend after seeking some better directions.

Has been a pretty low key weekend... found an internet cafe just down the road from the where im staying (which is where I sit right now). It reminds me of a hippy-chill out room at a music festival... oceans and suns painted on the walls and ceiling with fluro fish here and there... shame there is no AC tho, just fans. The weather here around the same al year round about 24 degrees min and 30-35 degrees max... humidity around 90%... eek!

Had KFC for lunch... they have a side of rice instead of fries here... a nice change.

Oh and I finally scored a screwdriver to get the batteries into my new robot... HE ROCKS! (see video). Possibly the awesomest thing ive bought this year!

Its a TRICK!!!!
I know why they put that big teapot there when you arrive.
As if your first instinct isnt going to be to point your finger at it.
FOOLED!
Brunei for the win!

I think you got here before I did and planted the giant teapot... or its the mothership of one of the aliens you caught with your detection watch last saturday night and u sent it on a diversion mission.

Giant Teapot
The teapot fit quite snuggly in my hand luggage though. You know how big my bags get...Your spot on there, it was all me.
My alien detection watch did pick up a nasty character who wore a moustache and caused a diversion when we arrived at Brunei airport so i could get the giant bags of sugar and giant teabags through customs.
He did an accent and everything. I watched for a little while and laughed and threw him money then realised I should get outa there as I had first planned.
