Home of the Canadian Air Force base that was part of the post-WW2 NATO deployment. I stayed with a Master-Sergeant in the Air Force at his home just off the base. It was almost like coming home! After the show we were entertained in the Mess with good Canadaian beer and a screening of the newly released: Monty Python's 'Life of Brian'.
At this time Canada was flying CF-104's which were just coming to the end of their lifespan. My host was one of the mechanics that kept them flying.
This is such a beautiful area! Apparently, one of the things that the locals like to do to relax is to wander into the forest, grooming and weeding as they go! After generations of this, the forests are more like gardens than forests! Coming from the wilds of British Columbia, I found this sight to be very striking! Even moreso when I stumbled upon the ruins of an old pillbox, machine gun fortification or artillery emplacement! The contrast was quite interesting.
