Where I stayed
Managed to flea from snow covered Gatwick with only a 3 hour delay. Landed in Varadero at sunset...and were faced by a sea of coaches...welcome to package tour land! We were whisked onto a Thomas Cook bus where a lovely Cuban hostess apologised as she couldn't locate our welcome envelope...not knowing that we hadn't actually booked a package and weren't therefore eligible for free transport ;) !!!
Varadero is a strip of land with resorts and beaches running along the north side.
On arrival at our 5 star (by cuban standards) resort, we were tagged and told that we were on an all inclusive package. The speciality restaurants however only accepted guests with reservations. These had to be made between 10am and 5pm...which meant that we were too late and had the luxury of eating in the buffet on our first night. What an adventure!
We gladly discovered that our tags meant free drinks all day long...a welcome discovery for us all-inclusive virgins. The beach was glorious...!!
The animation team members were relentless in engaging guests in activities. The majority of guests in Cuba arrive from Canada followed by the UK.
Tonight we were looking forward to our dinner in the Japanese restaurant. We were assigned a seat next to fellow guests from Canada and UK before being told that we were having teppanyaki cooked before our eyes. One of our fellow guests had to leave before the starter arrived as she was feeling poorly...probably as a result of the food consumed at the resort on previous days. The appetiser was a kind of 'muddy' water which was meant to be miso soup! Then our friendly Cuban chef set to work at impressing us with his 'egg-breaking' skills...managed after the 6th attempt! The meat was edible...while the desserts were pure gelatin.
Given that we were constrained to our resort for the evening, we joined the rest of the hotel guests in the theatre for the daily show. Tonight was a 'couples' competition with various games involving the partners getting intimate with each other's clothed bodies. The evening ended with a 'cubata' (cuba libre with dark rum) in the lobby bar.
