Élement d'analyse :  Education: college and university in England (Other element)


Descriptions:  The education systems of Quebec and United Kingdoms have a lot in common.  The college where I’m studying for my internship could easily be compare to the CÉGEP in Quebec. Students here go to college when they finish High School to get their "A levels" to go to university (2 years, like a pre-university in Quebec) or learn an apprenticeship (which lead to a job, just like a Technique in Quebec).  One of the first difference I’ve notice, is that people here start college at the age of 16 (younger than Quebec, where most of the students start CÉGEP at 17).  It means that they start university at 18!  Also at the college, students don’t have as many subject as us. Most of the students have only 3 or 4 subjects and have around 16h of class each week.  And there is no real program for the A levels, students can choose the subject they want,
from languages, to social science, pure science and more.  They don’t have any R cote.  To get to university, they have to reach the marks that the university asks. For example, for a same program, a university can ask for A B B and another can ask for A A B.  With these letters, you may have guessed that they are not marked in percentage like us, but in letter: D=50%, C=60%, B=70%, A=80% and A*=90%.  Also, they are not evaluating like us.  For example, in a literature exam, students have to compare a play and a poem to a statement.  And for this exam, they are only evaluated on the content. They don’t lose a point to every mistake they make, like we do in our literature class. 

Constat/analyse

I was quite surprise to see how college and CÉGEP have in common.  At the college, I have a time table of 4 subject, 16 hours a week, just as a student would have.   I study English Language, English Literature, History and French (where I help students by talking in French with them and doing some activities).  Between the two education systems, I still prefer the one we have in Quebec because in CÉGEP, we study more subjects and we acquire more general knowledge out of our field of study (I believe it’s a really good thing to do literature and Philosophy, even if we won’t study it at University).  In England, a student who wants to do only social science for its 2 years of A levels can.  However, I like the way university choose their student.  Their exams are nationalized (which mean that every college do the same final exams and are evaluated the same way).  This means that a student cannot be disadvantage because of a bad R cote (because he was in a strong group) or previous bad results when he apply to Uni.
