My last day in Meknes I took a day trip to Volubilis-site of the largest and best preserved Roman ruins in Morocco. While on my way back to Moulay Idriss I had decided to see the countryside and see the people-it was really beautiful.
Chefchaouen is unique. In 1494, it became the home of Muslim and Jewish refugees escaping persecution in Granada. It was these refugees who built the whitewashed houses-who you will see in my pictures. Chefchaouen has a distinctive Hispanic flavour due to the occupation of the Spanish until it independance in 1956.
Chefchaouen in a wide valley within the Rif Mountains. I hear that the Rif Mountains is the place that produces the largest production of hashish in the world. Perhaps the locals are right there is a whole lot of mountain out here and i do see the locals smoking kif.
My stay in Morocco is coming to an end. I had a wonderful journey here, I encountered so many nice people and a few annoying ones. I hope to return soon to visit the south and the Western Sahara.
I hope to be heading off to Tangier tomorrow.
