The hour-long journey from the airport to Shanti Lodge gave us the opportunity to reaquaint ourselves with Bangkok's rush hour traffic. By the time we got to our hotel, we were ready for food and ac. The lodge was beautifully decorated, with mosaics and pools of fish, and plants everywhere. After cooling off and having a wonderful dinner, we wandered to Khao San Road for Rick to do some bargain hunting. The 'five-to-ten minute' walk we were promised took closer to twenty. However, on arrival we were pleased to find that Khao San was as busy, brash and noisy as ever; t-shirt-buying mecca and probably the highest concentration of henna tattooists in the known planet. Rick haggled for a pair of trekking sandals, and we took a tuk tuk back to the lodge for some much needed sleep.
