Where I stayed
Rotorua is not a great place. Actually, Rotorua is a frikkin hole. Our hostel was large, dirty and un-welcoming (sorry Base). Everything in Rotorua cost money, even the "parks". $50 to see a geyser that should be public! Fat chance, suck it.
We left Rotorua around 1400. Jaiyme and Camiel said they would pay my next 2 nights accommodations because of my bad luck. They are a good couple of guys to be traveling with (I have found they are reading my blog so I can not compliment them too much, as I do not want to travel with over-inflated Dutch egos)
We arrived in Opotiki around 5 to find all the hostels full. Perhaps we should consider planning in the future. We almost went on o Te Kaha, but luckily, we phoned ahead, and found that all the hostels there were full too.
We back-tracked almost an hour to Whakatane (Fuck-a-taan-eh). We managed to get a place in Lloyd's Lodge; the best hostel so far. The owner is a lovely lady, and the hostel a house. Only a few beds so it is really cozy.
Tonight we ate spaghetti. Tomorrow we go to the East Cape.
