Possum!
Jaime has taken to shouting "possum" every time we see a possum.
Possum!
It has become a bit of a game; we try to shout out "possum" first. We have seen hundreds. I have yet to see a live one. They are like gophers in the prairies; carcasses littering the roads, the live versions are a pest, eating plants and eggs of kiwi birds.
The road going east is amazing. Windy, narrow, overlooking a beautiful blue ocean and running through amazing greenery.
We made it today to Hick's Bay. We are staying at the Mel's Place, another small, but amazing BBH backpackers.
All the dorm rooms were booked out, and we were ready to sleep on the beach, but Mel let us take an un-powered "caravan". There is an outside out-house and a shower warmed by leaving the black pipe exposed to the sun. The little bit of power they use is wind-generated. The area is (you guessed it!) amazingly beautiful. This is what I imagined New Zealand to be like, not like Rotorua (sorry, one more cheap shot).
Tomorrow we are leaving at 0430 to be the first in New Zealand to watch the sun rise.
