Someone (Rick Steves, I think) argues that travelers should stop for a "time out" every so often, a mini-vacation from traveling.   Today was my vacation.  I woke up at 8:30 and just enjoyed being in a lovely room in a renovated Chinese mansion.  My room is small, compact, but nicely decorated and comfortable.  The Yeng Keng is small - 20 rooms - but has lovely areas to sit and read or visit both inside and out.  Breakfast was wonderful with an assortment of Malaysian, Chinese, Indian, and Western menu items.  Curry puffs have always been a favorite and a variety of fresh fruit was too tempting to pass up.  Tomorrow I'm going for the Nasi Lemak and then Indian food the next day...  Breakfast is actually served only from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. so I think most travelers here must be on vacation, too.

Eventually I did venture out. Took the free central city tourist bus down to the Clock Tower and Fort Cornwallis, both remnants of the British settlement here.  Went to the Tourist Office for maps and info.  Enjoyed touring the Peranakan Mansion, a restored showplace built in the 1890's for a very wealthy Straits Chinese or Peranakan family.  Pinang Peranakans were usually Chinese who married Malay women and adopted Malay customs and the British colonial lifestyle.  This elaborate mansion has been restored by a new owner and is filled with antiques as well as glass and china collections.  The Straits Chinese Jewelry Museum is located here, too.

Spent the rest of the day relaxing, reading, enjoying breezes.  Dinner was at the local hawker center though the satay man took the night off so I had to go with pineapple fried rice.  A very relaxing day.

Beautiful Chinese mansion. We're getting several inches of snow today; at least 10 so continue to enjoy the warm weather!

I was hoping to come home to spring... not to snow. Maybe it won't last long.

It is supposed to be 40 degrees by Saturday. So maybe you will bring spring with you when you come back.

I'm counting on finding crocuses peeking through the snow. What are my chances?

Just shoveled for an hour. Can't wait to leave for AZ Thurs. morn.
Another funeral luncheon at church on Tues. so I'm ready for a vacation.
See you when I get back!
