Sunday, Thom and I went hiking to see the WWII site on the Sokehns Ridge. There are big guns (6 inch diameter and 10 feetlong) and lots of bunkers and shell storage areas. Thom is a history buff and has been to the site before. Apparently, the Japanese were expecting the allies to land here, but they didn't. The U.S. just bombed the place and moved on. The road up the hill is one lane with a drop off on one side. It is rutted and the car kept hitting bottom. On the way down, we met another car coming up.
There were 3 big Pohnpeians men in the other car. They directed Thom's car off the road unto a grassy (5 foot tall weeds) area. After the their car passed, they help us get back on the road.

Then we went swimming at one of the two beaches on Pohnpei. It has a man made lagoon and the water comes in from the open sea. The breeze from the ocean created little waves but they were no problem. One of the sides of the lagoon has a sandy beach (the sand was brought in) and the rest of the sides are rocky and it was hard for me to climb in and out of. I'm planning to go back again. This beach is only about 10 minutes from the apartment and on the way to work. It costs a dollar to go swimming and use their fresh water showers.

Pictures are coming of the Sokehns ridge.
